Just wondering on what people’s views are on accordions for crampons. Discuss.

I find the punctured bellows reduce sound quality significantly

They are a strange thing that is meant to do something useful (I cant even remember what- maybe protect the bar connecting the front and back of the crampon, or maybe reduce its chance of falling out), but ends up collecting water and speeding up the rusting of one’s crampons (so certainly store with accordions off). They are also extra weight. So I do not use them.

Also, what Aimee said: Therefore it might help to crampon hobos?

See pic for propper steep snow technique using trainers and plastic bottle instead of crampons and ice axe.

Accordions are an absolute necessity with Grivel crampons in order to keep the metal size adjusty thingy down. Dispense with them and put a bolt and locknut in your crampons instead.
