This is the first climbing trip of the year based in the beautiful surroundings of Glencolmcille in rural Donegal. On this trip, Freshers are paired with more experienced climbers who will provide instruction on the basics of gear placement, route planning and anchor construction, along with providing you with more experience at rock climbing.
The accommodation for the weekend is Dooey Hostel, located on the outskirts of Glencolmcille. The cottage is fully catered, consisting of numerous 8 person dormitories with adjacent kitchen and bathroom facilities, a warm and relaxing communal living room and an owner that is both barking mad and the most lovely person in the world – Mary!
PLEASE NOTE: The club does not supply food for this weekend, and so club members are encouraged to team together to reduce costs.
The weekend takes the following general format.
Departure takes place from the Queen’s PEC at ~6pm with arrival expected at ~10pm. On route a stop off is made at Asda for attendees to purchase provisions for the weekend. After getting settled at the hostel, a few drinks are had with a bit of socialising and the “Box Game.”
After waking up at ~8am and having breakfast, the aim is to travel to the nearby climbing venues for ~9.30am. This of course is after ensuring that the hostel is left tidy from the night before…
To warm up, several top ropes will be constructed and Freshers will be taught how to “Top Rope Belay.” After this, experienced club members will pair off with Freshers and tackle some nearby climbing routes. Saturday evening sees a spot of “Nighttime Beach Bouldering,” followed by a sociable pint in the village. On Sunday the travel home is from the climbing venues, so all personal gear is to be brought with you.
